Planting the Earth Box

For the past couple of years, Granchild #5, who is now almost 7 years old, has been excited about planting her own mini garden, so I help. Here we are with her earth box we planted with kale, ruby red swiss chard, and a variety of lettuce plants and seeds, in addition to the chives from last year's planting. Her Brother, Grandchild # 8  helped. (While we were busy with the planting, Papa took Grandaughter #1 out to practice driving--- she has her permit and is just learning to drive!)

This afternoon I went out to my own garden and surveyed what I had planted 2 weeks ago:  sugar snap peas, snow peas, red cabbage plants, lettuce, beets, and spinach are starting to grow.  Today I added broccoli, cauliflower, and green cabbage plants I had started from seed back in Feb. I've been harvesting a few asparagus spears and sorrel leaves, and am hoping if a late frost should come, it won't harm the strawberry blossoms.  Today I am thankful for time with grandkids, a chance to get my hands in the dirt, and the hope of good healthy food this summer.
